What’s in a title?

October 6, 2016

One of the interesting facets of creating a piece of art is the naming of the work. It reminds me of the naming of my children. Since my name, Paul, can actually be pronounced while yawning, I wanted to give my kids more intriguing names. Their mother agreed.

Adding a title to my drawings has proven to be more of a challenge. There are no books entitled “Popular Names For Your Drawing.” This in no way means I am alone in the process. I once had a good friend stop his lawn mowing to race to his phone with a title he was sure I’d love for the drawing I was about to finish. He was devastated when I informed him I had a different direction in mind.

On occasion, the title of my drawing provides the impetus for my work. “Walking On Eggshells” would be an example of this, as would “Badger The Witness.” My favorite title came near the end of the creation of “Bad Hare Day.”

My current drawing is nearing completion, and I have three options in consideration. In my next blog, I’ll be providing an image of the drawing and an opportunity for you to vote for your preference. I realize that my telling you this in advance will undoubtedly cost you some sleep. Take a deep breath. Its not like you’re trying to choose between two classy candidates for president. THAT would be tricky.
